Favourite Holiday Snacks

I have spent so much time this Blogmas talking about beverages that I have absolutely forgotten to talk about snacks! What am I even doing here?! I think we all know that the holidays are really all about the food. Latkes at Hanukkah, that Christmas Goose that is bigger than a small boy in The Christmas Carol, fancy cheeses everywhere. And snacks! You know… your favourite holiday snacks.

Okay, yes, those peanut butter marshmallow squares are a classic. (I will never forget the time that my coworker Gillian made these and, for whatever reason, all the peanut butter sunk to the bottom. It left a very light glaze on the rest of the marshmallows. Absolutely delicious, but very weird.)

Anyway, despite that complete non-sequitur in the parentheses, I am not talking about the baking and snacks that we make at home. Though those are great. What I am talking about is the special, seasonal versions of snacks that brands put out. Look, I wait all year for these delicious goodies. So here they are, my favourite holiday snacks.

White Fudge Covered Oreos

These cookies give me such nostalgia. I remember seeing them come out in December and the excitement of getting to bring one in my lunch kit on very special days. For me, that was always the sign that the holiday season was here.

I think you can now buy the regular chocolate fudge ones year round, but the white fudge remains a holiday only snack. Did I pick up two boxes just for myself this year? I’ll never tell…

You may be picking up a trend here… These crackers, I think, started coming into stores some time in my late 20s. I sort of remember going over to my parents’ old house and my mom showing them to me. She knows what I’m all about.

These salty-sweet crackers are truly incredible. And, I know, I could make them myself. But for less than $4 and the true gift of my time, I can also buy them from the store.

Honey Mustard Pretzels & Nuts

Speaking of salty-sweet – these little beauties are a new addition to my holiday snack rotation. Again, my mother is the one who introduced them to me a few years ago and now every year I have to grab a bag from Costco. A little bit goes a loooong way with this mix – there are lots of nuts, there are big chunks of pretzels, the mustard is very zesty.

It’s almost worth throwing a party so you have an excuse to throw the entire bag into a large bowl and graze at it all night.

Or have a little bowl each day and make it last a month. Or a big bowl. I’m not going to tell you what to do!

So those are my three favourites, but I’m always looking to add something to the repertoire. I love weird snacks! So let me know – what are your favourite holiday snacks?
