Eighty-Eight Beer Advent Calendar – Day One

eighty-eight beer advent calendar - day 1

One of the things that really kept me going, kept me inspired, during Blogmas last year was my holiday beer exchange. It gave me something consistent to write about and I had fun being creative with how I photographed the beers. You know? I looked at the things I did a little bit differently. Fun!

This year, life has really been life. I have been able to fill my life with so many things I absolutely love and it’s been full of changes. (I’ll talk more about this when I do my Word of the Year post, as that is the place for reflections.) However, it hasn’t allowed for a lot of bandwidth left over for organizing a beer exchange. In fact, it hasn’t allowed for a lot of bandwidth left over for much, other than dropping things in my living room and going on to the next thing… Imma gonna need to declutter my living room this weekend.

And I’m not the only one. We are living full lives, y’all! (Also, my dear friend Megan, who was the driving force behind last year’s exchange, broke her ankle. We have all entered a season of rest in sympathy.)

Anyway. All that to say – this year I bought a beer advent calendar from Eighty-Eight Brewing Company, home of my favourite local beer, Tiffany. I’ll write more about Eighty-Eight in my next advent calendar post, as I’ve already rambled enough here today, so let’s get onto the beer!

First Some Housekeeping

Oh yes, thank you, me.

General housekeeping:

As always, I will be keeping the beer behind a cut for those who are doing the advent calendar on a different schedule. (The brewery itself is starting on Dec 13.)

Eighty-Eight includes a little hint for each beer, so before the cut, I will try to guess which beer it is. Except for today, Day One, because I only came up with this idea now.

Day One Clue

And now follow me through the cut!

Murder on the Orient Express – Theatre Thursday

On Theatre Thursdays, I discuss topics related to theatre. I also write about local productions that I think #yyc should see. Today I’m talking about one of the many holiday productions currently running – Murder on the Orient Express.

Guess what everyone? It’s December 1! And you know what that means? It’s Blogmas!!

Unlike last year, I did stunningly at Nanowrimo this year. I clocked in at 50,5871 words at about 11pm on November 30. I am so hyped about my book and ready to keep grinding at it. Mostly because I just really need to know what happens next to my characters.

I am also excited to keep my practice of writing every day going, but refocusing a little bit to sharpen my non-fiction writing skills. And I had so much fun doing Blogmas last year, how could I not do it again? Once again, I can’t promise everything I write will be Christmas related, but y’all know it will all be fun!

Especially because this year December 1 is a Thursday, so that means we get to start out with an old classic – Theatre Thursday! And you read it above – I’m talking about Vertigo Theatre’s production of Murder on the Orient Express.

Ten Good Things

Ten Good Things

Today is Blogmas Day 22 and it is going to be another one of those little bit weird posts. This week of the year is always a little bit crazy for me. (I coordinate a course at work that starts first thing in the New Year and things always sort of pop off this week. There is no way to get ahead of it, it’s just the way it is.) Add to that the fact that the Omicron variant is popping off as well, which is obviously having an impact on post-secondary education, and… it’s been a time. But my blog started as a place for joy and distraction, and that’s what it’s always been for me. So today will be no different. Today, instead of dwelling in the stress, I am going to redirect my energies and challenge myself to write about ten good things that happened this week.

Beer Exchange Day 11

Oof, this post is going to be a late one going up. (Though… still on the correct day! It’s still going to be Day 21, which is the day it is supposed to be going up. Which makes me a success!)

Anyway, today I finally watched Tick Tick Boom, which I should have watched a month ago because 15 year old me would have been aghast that it took so long to watch a thing about Jonathan Larson, but life is life and here we are. I loved it.

I also watched Spiderman: No Way Home but I will say absolutely nothing about it because I understand very much that people have feelings about spoilers.

So, with all that nothingness out of the way, let’s move onto the penultimate beer of the Beer Exchange – Beer 11! Follow me through the cut, mes amis!

Christmas Traditions

Well well well, mes amis. We are reaching the part of Blogmas where I am getting super hyped for the holidays and running out of ideas to write about! I will be on winter break starting on Friday and I am so excited. Sleeping in, cleaning my house, reading books, and working out during the day time?! Yes, please! These are my Christmas traditions!

Annoying Kevin - my christmas traditions

Hmmm… or is being annoying to Kevin in selfies my Christmas tradition? (Literally, I think I have a Christmas picture where I try to force joy upon Kevin every year for the past decade.)

None of this is true. My family has actual Christmas traditions that don’t involve me being a hot mess. Traditions that reach back years, traditions that might look super weird to outsiders. But guess what? I’ll hazard a guess that your family’s traditions would probably look super weird to us!

Beer Exchange Day 10

It’s Day 10 of the beer exchange, Day 19 of blogmas and are things getting a little crazy?

Okay, they are not. Crazy is a wild overstatement.

But I am definitely in the place where I am trying my very best to try to make things as interesting for me as possible.

Beer 10 wrapped

Taking overly artistic beer photos? Oh, yes, I am here. (And thank goodness my partner-in-crime brother, Kevin, was up for developing something artsy.) Now, what beer is beneath that beautiful wrapping? Well… follow me through the cut…

Hallmark Christmas Movies (The At Home Week)

Happy Saturday and happy Blogmas Day 18, friends! It’s the weekend, it’s mildly chilly outside, and I am getting ready to snuggle in on my couch. I have a mug of Sleigh Ride and I’m ready for a perennial Christmas tradition – Hallmark Christmas Movies!

You know the ones. Someone is way too busy or jaded for the season but a series of hijinks leads to both love and festivity.

Beer Exchange Day 9

Beer 9 Wrapped

Can we talk about how cute the wrapping for Beer 9 is!? There has been a lot of great wrappings during the Beer Exchange (and a super borderline one that I did not post for my beer), but there is something about that gift tag that just tickled my fancy.

It indicated that there was something special about Beer 9 and it did not lie.

(Note: More information about the beer after the cut. But also more information about Survivor so just… like… read through with caution if you don’t want to be spoiled.)

Gingerbread Cookies (The At Home Week)

Y’all. It is crazy outside today – so cold, so blustery. It is incredibly appropriate for “at home” week on the blog because I truly do not want to be anywhere other than my home right now. Maybe getting aggressively festive with some Jingle Bell Chai and a gingerbread cookie.

(Note 1: I still have to go to work and have play rehearsal so I will not achieve that goal.)

(Note 2: When I say “it’s cold”, I mean that it is -18 and feels like -29. For those Americans or Fahrenheit fans, that’s basic -0.5, feels like -20. That’s definitely weather where the air hurts your face!)
