The Best Gin and Tonic

My friends! I am on vacation, ready to read, write, and relax for a week straight, and it’s World Gin Day! I wasn’t planning to post today, but I am a sucker for a themed drink day… plus, after over four hours in the car, I just had to pour myself something delicious and share with you all the best gin and tonic recipe. It’s super simple, so let’s get right into it!

Seriously… it’s the BEST Gin and Tonic

Ingredients (with bonus commentary!)

  • Ice
  • 2 ounces of your favourite gin (I prefer Eau Claire’s Flourish when I’m at home, but Tanqueray is what we have here and it’s great in this recipe too!)
  • 5 ounces of tonic water (Fever Tree is yummy, though at home I also like to make my own tonic water with this tonic syrup and water from my soda stream)
  • Lime wedge (though if you get a good citrus-y gin, you can skip this step)
  • A few drops of a good olive oil (do not skip this! it adds a savoury balance that can’t be beat)
  • A pinch of salt (again… I normally do a sea salt at home, but this table salt worked just fine)
Gin and Tonic Ingredients

Instructions

Combine the ingredients in the order they appear. Give a little stir and enjoy a delicious, refreshing beverage!

The BEST gin and tonic!

I must give credit where credit is due – I watched the incomparable Michael Biggatini from Willow Park Wine and Spirits make this cocktail on an Instagram live in the early days of the pandemic and it has lived rent free in my mind ever since. It is simple to make, it holds up to basically any ingredients you have, it’s customizable… I often make it with a hibiscus tonic water or a pink gin or herbs from my Aerogarden instead of the lime or a splash of juice to replace an ounce of tonic.

As long as you keep the proportions generally the same, you can’t go wrong. So please, run to your cabinet and raise a glass to World Gin Day with the best gin and tonic. (Or if you’re not feeling the hard stuff today, feel free to try out my recipe for a shrub, aka the best mocktail!)

Don’t get me wrong, friends. I like a glass of wine just as much as the next totally independent and productive grown woman. (Side comment: I’m trying not to say “girl” as much these days. I’ve been trying for like a year though, so you can imagine how well it’s going.) I like to learn about wine. I like the ritual of selecting a bottle from my bar. I like having a special drink at the end of the day. But my pocketbook, internal organs and cognitive functions are not always there for a wine. And that is where this post comes in – the best mocktail for this holiday season!

And by “holiday season”, I mean “zooming with friends from our own homes while wearing fancy clothes”. Yet another reason to maybe not always reach for the wine.
